I've been reading the Windows Vista User Exprience Guidelines and the "Top Guidelines Violations" at Microsoft. http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa511331.aspx In the section of capitalization of command buttons I found the following interesting: "Use sentence-style capitalization. Doing so is more appropriate for Windows Vista tone and the use of short phrases for command buttons. Exception: For legacy applications, you may use title-style capitalization if necessary to avoid mixing capitalization styles." Sentence-style capitalization is when the first letter of the string has a capital letter like "Copy to clipboard". Title-style capitalization is when the first letter of every word (with some exceptions) have a capital letter like "Copy to Clipboard". Previously MS themselves has always used Title-style capitalization for their applications and their guidelines recommended this design, but with Vista this has obviously changed. However if you check Vista applications like Paint, WordPad, Internet Explorer or Office 2007 you will notice that all applications still use sentence-style capitalization. I asked MS why they didn't follow their own guidelines and got the following reply "We’re aware that it will take some time for Microsoft applications to follow this guideline completely, in part because legacy UI often carries over from release to release. The guideline is thus a goal for the long term." Also, there are no official guidelines for other languages than English available from MS. In Swedish for example, sentence-style capitalization is and has always been used and of course in German all subjectives are spelled with an initial capital letter. Does anyone know of guidelines for different languages are available from any other source than Microsoft?
