Hi,

Sorry if I am totally mistaken, probably a simple language issue (I am French).

I have downloaded Kaboom to convert Windows 1252 files (.php) into UTF-8 in bulk.

OK.

I have converted successfully one file.

I would like to do it with your multi-converter but impossible to drag and drop from Windows explorer (all files are in a dossier).
I have tried to select all files then move them in your upper window, but impossible
I have tried to select the whole dossier then move it in your upper window, but impossible.
Besides the options below (delete entries selectall etc.) are all in gray.

Thanks for your help,

JH

Hi,

Me again.

I moved forward.

A probable explanation of the problem was that my notepad++ was open at the same time.
I closed it and now it works.
I converted all my 1561 files then was able to check... BUT there is a problem with special characters.

For example, if I have Calvino with n with spanish tilde in Windows 1252, then Kaboom replaces it in UTF-8 by Calviño when the file is online (on notepad++ this is the same problem but Ansi has been replaced by UTF-8!!!)

When I use Notepad++, the conversion is correct (but I have to do each file manually).

Thanks for your comments/help.

JH

Hi,
Kaboom uses the Windows API to do the conversion. Can you please upload a file with the problem in it using Private Upl.oad and I give it a try here.
Markus

Hi,

Many thanks for your proactive reaction.

Attached is a jpg with a file Ansi (=before Kaboom) in Wampserver (= not online), problem with the french e with an accent (in title and various parts of texts  second e of Lacepède replaced by a blank)
Attached in private up.load is the php file of an Ansi file with another accent, this time with a tilde, after the automatic batch conversion by Kaboom, as I have explained in previous message.

Thanks for your your help.

JH

Hi,

in your ANSI file are already UTF-Encodings which use more than one char. Kaboom (or better the underlying Windows function) expects single chars. In a hex editor you see the UTF-8 in your ANSI already became 4 chars ñ. I would call that double conversion.

Try to create in Notepadd a new file. Choose ANSI as encoding. Enter "Test ñ" in it and save it as test.txt. Now try to convert this to UTF-8 (best with BOM to make test easier). Now open the result in Notepad++. It will look the same but in the menu you'll see Notepadd++ uses UTF-8 to display. If you look in a HEX editor you will see the strange chars you see, since UTF-8 encodes chars > 128 in multiple bytes.

I fear you'll have to use search and replace in your originals before you can convert them all in a batch to UTF-8 with Kaboom. With Notepadd++ it should be no problem to do that in few minutes. Take care to edit them all in ANSI. Simply use the search in files option an repair the chars who went mad in the past. Replace ñ to ñ in all files. Do the same with the french accents you see issues. Good luck your files are in english and the issues seem only to happen with names in it.

Hopefully ANSI files with codepages will die some day. It is a source of problems like you see them....

Markus

Hi,

Thanks.

Not very optimistic. But I'll have a try.

How can I spot those problems in general terms (if with notepad++ I did not catch your suggestion in practical details).

Anyway my problem is that those (today) 1561 files in php are generated by a VBA program from an Excel file.

The only safe solution would be to spot those "mad" characters in the Excel file itself don't you think?

Best, JH

I would think Notepad++ and the Search in Files option is a good solution. It can use Search and Replace in all your 1500+ files very fast. You have to do a search and replace it for each broken char. But better than doing all the files one-by-one.
If you can go to the source and fix the issue bevore it happens that would be better. But that's far beyond the scope of our support :-)

Hi,

Yes I know that option in Notepad++.

The problem is the list of those 'mad' characters is not known to me.

They may have appeared from a copy-paste from the web to my Excel.

I'll check spotly and see. (and now I have an intermediate step in the copy-paste process with a txt or doc page so that Microsoft change automatically the format to a 'clean' Ansi... I guess -although it maybe more complicated).

Anyway we are outside your support obviously, and I wish, along closing this thread, to thank you warmly.

JH (from Paris, with great sun, this Sunday)
